Teacher Assistant

Afterschool Socialization Program

East Los Angeles Part-time

Working with individuals with special needs, the Teacher Assistant will assist individuals, ages five to twenty-two,  in a socialization training setting in recreational activities, adaptive sports and aquatic activities in the Centro Estrella therapeutic pool. Execute other activities consistent with the program description and goals.  Assist with activities of daily living, including dressing, self-feeding, toileting, and maintaining the clients’ overall good personal hygiene.  Follow health and safety requirements.  Care for supplies of equipment and materials that are maintained and in support of program activities. Work under the supervision of the lead teacher.  Work with other instructional aides, volunteers and interns as advised by the Program Manager.  Participate in staff meeting and in-service training sessions.  All other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications:  :  In addition to meeting the qualifications as stated in State of California, Title XXII (Section 101216 and 101216.2) Regulations, the Instructional Assistant must have the following additional qualifications.  Must be 18 years of age or older.  High School graduate of completion of high school equivalency exam, such as a GED.  Completion of at least six (6)  semester units or equivalent quarter units in child development of related field.  Experience working with children with special needs.  Bilingual in Spanish, speak fluently and write.  Current First Aid and Community CPR certification (8hrs) and Child Care: California approved Child Care Provider Course (7hrs): Total of 15hrs.  Ability to use sound judgment.  Must have an understanding of human needs, behavior and motivation and the ability to develop the capabilities of others.  Must be able to complete forms required for daily program records.  Ability to tolerate odors that may be considered unpleasant.  Ability to handle confidential information.  Bilingual English/Spanish required.

Salary: $18 - $24/hour
